Pitch

My production, Stars Align, is about ordinary people that have overcome hardships in their lives, which has caused them to find different paths. The show will have the ordinary people talk about their aspirations to higher achievements and they have been rewarded through what they do now. The website will depict them all describing their future aspirations now that they have achieved their first goal. In the 3 minute introduction, the people are shown that feature in the episode. The beginning segment will be polaroids to introduce the people in this episode, each polaroid will be zoomed into each person before the next one appears on the screen also holding a polaroid. Then a brief taster of Ophelia’s story as she tells us how she was bullied for her sexuality and how her aspiration to be an actress helped her overcome her bullying, Ophelia will answer some of the questions the audience has asked her through the question box on the website. Ophelia will be in a playground to represent how she is remembering her childhood and past misfortunes. Ophelia represents sexuality, it is particularly important to show today’s youth members of the LGBTQ+ community so they feel comfortable watching the show, Ophelia acts as an anti-stereotype, however, as she wears bohemian, black clothing which evades stereotypes of a gay person. Ophelia wears gloves to depict her sophistication, and also to imply that she enjoys the anti-stereotype. Ophelia’s section also has the ambient sounds of birds as she walks through a piece of playground equipment. There is also synchronous sound of Ophelia kicking leaves as she attempts to clear the pathway for the next shot. After this Doug, a nature photographer, will be walking through a forest and the narrator and Doug himself will describe how he grew up in a poor household; his long time aspiration was to make others happy through photography and uses nature as it is what he grew up with so he wishes for other people to share in this joy. Doug represents gender as boys also need a role model to look up to in the show so Doug shows boys it isn’t feminine to aspire to be greater than your background; this is particularly important because of negative stereotypes surrounding working class males. Doug’s section will be located in a forest which represents his closeness with nature as this is the natural setting where he is comfortable. After Doug, there will be a brief section of a crew member entering Kathy’s house, fading into Kathy opening the door. Kathy is a world famous baker, and describes her journey since her horse riding accident that rendered her unable to fulfil her initial dream, she now aspires for others to see her work and carry on her legacy. Kathy represents disability connoting the accessibility of the show, appealing to a wider audience, Kathy embodies aspiration carrying on after the big event in her life that led to the devastation of her career, and that even growing older, people can still have new aspirations. Kathy has baking equipment as it represents her career and part of the show as she shows the audience how to make her world famous brownies. Kathy wears glasses to show that she is intellectual and she is ageing. Kathy’s section is set in the studio flat where she lives so it is easy to get more of a picture of her lifestyle. For costumes, all of the people are in their normal clothes to maintain the genre conventions of lifestyle TV and the lighting will remain ambient throughout the show to represent the naturality of the situation. Lifestyle shows do not have many differing angles or movement of camera as they are low budget and rely on dialogue and the ordinary people’s lives for entertainment. Therefore my shots will generally be long shots and mid shots in order to keep in traditional genre convention, however Kathy’s section will have many close ups and extreme close ups on her baking montage so the audience can get a better look at what she is making. Furthermore, the angles will be mostly generic, beside the montage that will have a few high angles and birds eye views. However, there will not be any low angles as these do not often feature in lifestyle shows. The camera will move in two ways, panning and zooming in: the pans will be on Ophelia’s movement around the playground, whereas the zoom shots are throughout each section of the production, particularly the opening sequence so the audience focus stays on the people in the show and what they’re doing. Throughout the production there will be both the diegetic sound of the people speaking and the non-diegetic sound of the background music. The music will be chosen specifically to suit each character’s personalities and what they are doing in their section of the show. There will be little editing in my production as generic lifestyle television shows don’t have much editing apart from transitions to maintain the continuation and flow of the show. At the end of the show, the narrator will introduce what will happen after the break whilst Doug is speaking which will be muted to develop the continuation of the programme as the audience can infer that they will hear what Doug has to say later in the programme. In essence the show depicts three very different people growing up with differing aspirations, and shows how different walks of life end up with differing aspirations compared to others.
